The Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum will participate in the annual Blue Star Museums program to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families. The free admission program runs from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day 2018.
“We are proud to take part in this program, which allows the families of servicemen and servicewomen to enjoy these museums at no cost,†said MDAH director Katie Blount. “It is a great way to show our appreciation for our armed forces. The proud tradition of military service is reflected in exhibits in each museum.â€
The Blue Star Families program is available for those currently serving in the United States military and up to five family members. The military ID holder can be either an active duty service member or another dependent family member with an appropriate ID card. The active duty member does not have to be present for family members to use the program.
Blue Star Museums is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums nationwide. A complete list of participating museums is at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum opened alongside the Museum of Mississippi History in December 2017 in celebration of the state’s bicentennial. The Museum of Mississippi History explores the entire sweep of the state’s history. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the first state-operated civil rights museum in the country, explores the period from 1945 to 1976, when Mississippi was ground zero for the Civil Rights Movement nationally.
The Two Mississippi Museums are administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Tickets to the museums are $12 for both museums for adults and $7 for youth eighteen and under. Children under three are admitted free. Groups of ten or more receive discounted pricing of $6 per adult and $3 per student for one museum and $10 per adult and $5 per student for museums. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
